Commentary

“States have recently made headlines in efforts to thwart misclassification of employees as independent contractors. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy established a task force on employee misclassification in an executive order signed last week. Separately, 12 attorneys general filed a friend of the court brief in a case before the National Labor Relations Board, arguing that intentional misclassification can violate the National Labor Relations Act.

In addition, the California Supreme Court on April 30 ruled in favor of using a tougher test on misclassification that could cast doubt on workers’ arrangements in that state. And it may already be affecting gig economy firms. Reuters reported human cloud, ride-sharing firm Lyft Inc. and courier service Postmates — an online delivery app that matches independent contractor couriers with consumers and businesses — are among the first companies to be sued under that decision.”

Movers & Shakers

Scott Gutz will be joining Monster.com as Chief Executive Officer, effective July 2, 2018. Most recently, he was CEO of Amadeus North America, Inc., a provider of technology solutions to the travel and tourism industry.

Bob Melk has joined Monster.com as its chief commercial officer. From 2014-2017, he was president of Dice.com and before that, ran Rigzone.

Thad Price, CEO of Talroo.com, and Richard Collins, CEO of ClickIQ, will be Co-Chairing the 2019 TAtech International Working Group on Traffic Quality.

Job Boards, Social Media Sites & Recruitment Advertising

Fairygodboss, a Glassdoor for women, announced that it has raised $3 million in venture capital. The company launched in 2015 and competes with other sites targeting gender specific reviews like InHerSight and WomenHack. This financing round closed on April 30 and brings the total capital raised to $4 million. “We are thrilled to announce that Fairygodboss has received a major venture capital investment from GSV Acceleration,” said the company’s cofounders, Georgene Huang and Romy Newman in a blog post. “This new financing is going to help us build our product and our team so that Fairygodboss continues to be the largest and fastest-growing career community for women.” Source: Joel Cheesman, ERE

In case you were living on another planet last week: Glassdoor’s plans for an IPO have long been one of talent acquisition’s worst-kept secrets; 2018 was perhaps finally going to be the year, and the company has even been thought to be interviewing banks. Instead, it was “another staffing company buying another job board,” as College Recruiter’s Steven Rothberg said, when the recruiting field first learned of the sale earlier tonight, on, naturally, Facebook. Yes, Glassdoor surprised the industry when it announced it was, instead of going public, selling to Recruit Holdings, a company that owns Indeed and has long been interested in being a global recruitment power out of Tokyo. (Monster, of course, was sold to the staffing company Randstad.) Assuming the regulators approve it, the $1.2 billion deal is supposed to go through this summer. The Mom Project, a Chicago-based platform for enterprises to connect with experienced and diverse talent, raised $2.6 million in seed funding. Atlanta Seed Company led the round, and was joined by investors including OCA Ventures, BBG Ventures, IrishAngels, Wintrust Ventures and Engage VC.

SJS is a free job board template this is available for free from a UK based company. I assume its a wordpress theme. They offer a “complete” version of it for $25 and hosting for about $4/month. The software appears to only offer Indeed as a backfill option. The interface is nicely designed (you can view the demo here). I cannot attest to its functionality or reliability but its nice to see another inexpensive tool for job boarders. Source: Job Board Secrets

BrightMove, a leader in applicant tracking, hiring and recruiting software announced it has joined the ZipRecruiter ATS Partner Program and integrated ZipRecruiter’s Quick Apply feature. Applicants applying for jobs distributed through BrightMove’s powerful Job Distribution Engine, can now click on the Quick Apply button and remain on ZipRecruiter when applying for a job. According to an internal ZipRecruiter study, Quick Apply makes it easier for candidates to apply for jobs by reducing application friction and converts 5X as many candidates across every device. eQuest, a large job posting distribution company, continues to invest in new technology and solutions to ensure customer success, most recently with a state-of-the-art audit portal offered through its Compliance Division. Newly built from the ground up, the online portal captures and reports on all recent and historical job posting activity, which is critical for passing strict audits by the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Federal Compliance Contract Programs (OFCCP).
