Post-election hiring trends: what history can tell TA leaders

In the recruitment industry, the impacts of political cycles and major national events are often felt in labor market trends and hiring volumes. Data from the last three U.S. presidential elections highlights potential links between shifts in job posting rates and election outcomes, offering insights for talent acquisition leaders as they prepare for fluctuations in hiring demand. Looking back at recent election cycles, an analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Lightcast reveals a pattern: Hiring activity has often increased following elections that resulted in Democratic administrations, while a stabilization or slight decline in hiring has followed elections of Republican administrations. However, economic and sociopolitical factors likely have a stronger influence on these hiring trends than election results alone.

OpenAI Hits 300 Million Weekly Active Users

OpenAI’s user base has surged to an impressive 300 million weekly active users, CEO Sam Altman revealed at The New York Times DealBook Summit. His ambition is to get to a billion by next year. To drive adoption, OpenAI is investing in product innovation. Today (December 5) is the first day of what Altman called “the twelve days of shipmas,” where OpenAI will introduce new products daily for the next 12 days. This should include Sora, the company’s text-to-video AI model. The company is also investing in marketing, hiring Coinbase’s Kate Rouch as its first CMO. Altman also addressed reports of exclusivity clauses with investors, clarifying that OpenAI restricts competitors from accessing proprietary materials like its roadmap, not from receiving funding.

SHRM challenges New Jersey’s ‘right to disconnect’ bill

Some countries, including France, Argentina, Ireland and Australia, give workers the legal right not to respond to emails or calls after hours and not face negative repercussions. But these “right to disconnect” laws haven’t made headway in the U.S. yet. The laws, in part, try to protect workers’ time amid the blurring of boundaries that has accompanied technological advancements and the growth of remote and hybrid work. The proposed New Jersey bill “defines the right to disconnect to mean that, except for an emergency or for scheduling, as defined, an employee has the right to ignore communications from the employer during nonworking hours.” SHRM and Garden State Council-SHRM said the bill could present legal challenges over the definition of an emergency, could delay important business decisions, threaten the global competitiveness of U.S. businesses and potentially create an administrative burden.

US appeals court upholds TikTok ban

A federal appeals court has unanimously voted to uphold a law that could ban TikTok in the U.S. unless the social network’s parent company, ByteDance, sells it to an American owner. The decision comes seven months after TikTok filed a lawsuit against the federal government over the ban. The ruling rejects TikTok’s claims that the law violates the U.S. Constitution’s commitment to free speech and individual liberty.
