This AI startup raised $5.3 million to help people “cheat on everything.” But in the age of AI, how do you define cheating? Columbia University recently suspended student Roy Lee for building a tool to help people cheat on engineering interviews. He’s been making waves on X after posting a long thread detailing the saga and how he and his co-founder, Neel Shanmugam, have now turned that product into a startup called Cluely.
More than half of hiring managers in tech surveyed by General Assembly said their companies are likely to conduct layoffs within the next year — and workers with jobs that can be replaced by artificial intelligence tools may be on the chopping block, according to a report released April 22. Those likely to be let go also include those with outdated skills sets, underperformers, those who work on deprioritized projects and those who work remotely, according to the data. However, 69% said advances in AI tech will lead to new jobs, and more than 3 in 4 tech hiring leaders said “it’s very or completely likely” that employees potentially slated for layoff could be reskilled.
I am tired of hearing, “AI won’t take your job, but someone using AI will.” This is false reassurance for recruiters. AI isn’t just automating tasks—it’s dismantling everything recruiting has been based on. The role isn’t evolving; it’s disappearing. Recruiting, as we know it today, is becoming obsolete—not just because AI automates tasks, but because work itself is being redesigned. The skills that once made recruiters indispensable may soon be irrelevant, not because they were performed poorly or too slowly, but because the underlying processes no longer require them.
Recent rollbacks to company diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives appear to be affecting women, including their career plans and subsequent job behavior, according to a Women in the Workplace Survey from Fairygodboss. Half of women also said anxiety about the current changes has influenced their own career plans, such as being cautious about changing jobs, prioritizing job security over their career growth and seeking employers with DEI commitments. Nearly half of women said they’re considering freelance or gig work for additional financial security. Around 2 in 5 are expanding their job search by location or industry and feeling pressure to accept lower pay or lesser benefits. About a third of women said they’re pursuing additional education or certifications as a backup plan.
The War on Talent in AI is a continually relevant topic in the media. This narrative gained traction with the emergence of generative AI (GenAI), a transformative technology that promises to produce increasingly intelligent AI systems. The leading tech giants in the US are currently in a race to master this technology, resulting in a surge of capital investment aimed at gaining an advantage. This includes significant funding to acquire the talent necessary to develop the next generation of their Frontier AI models. Inspired by Moneyball in baseball, which pioneered the use of data to identify undervalued players, Zeki Data collected data on the top 2,000 individuals specialising in pushing the boundaries of research and engineering behind the creation of the most powerful Frontier AI models outside of China.
