AI adoption in the workplace is deepening divisions and sparking new power struggles between leaders and workers, with half of executives saying that AI is “tearing their company apart,” according to new research from Writer, the enterprise AI startup. The big picture: Executives are pushing AI as an inevitable revolution, but workers aren’t buying it.
In the news: Last week, Google and OpenAI asked the White House for permission to train AI on copyrighted content, arguing that restrictive laws will cripple U.S. innovation while China advances unchecked. Their case: AI doesn’t copy; it learns patterns and creates something new. That’s fair use, they claim—the same principle that powers search engines and chatbots. Hollywood disagrees. Yesterday, 400+ industry leaders—including Ron Howard, Cate Blanchett, Paul McCartney—sent a letter warning that this would open the floodgates to unlicensed use of scripts, music, and books.
Companies are increasingly recognizing the need for a more strategic, agile talent acquisition approach. As technology and markets evolve, the war for talent is intensifying. This is especially the case for niche and high-demand skills in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and machine learning, financial analysis and data literacy. As a result, the traditional model of reactive hiring is being abandoned. Talent acquisition teams are moving to a proactive, demand-side approach that aligns talent strategies with business objectives. This shift is more than a trend. It fundamentally changes how organizations view and manage their human capital.
While recruiting was the top priority for HR professionals in 2024, leadership and management development has taken the top spot this year, according to the 2025 SHRM State of the Workplace report. In fact, recruiting did not break the top three priorities for 2025. “This highlights a shift among workers and HR professionals from focusing on acquiring new talent to enhancing the capabilities of existing employees in order to address evolving organizational needs,” the report said.
The United States is not properly following national laws already on the books as it pertains to green card holders, international students and those with H-1B visas, according to multiple immigration attorneys who spoke with Newsweek. New measures have reportedly led to more disorder for some at security checks and points of entry, as well as for lawful permanent residents returning to the U.S. from abroad.
