Employers increasingly shed jobs, reflecting economic uncertainty

U.S.-based employers announced nearly 76,000 job cuts in August, marking a 193% increase from the nearly 26,000 cuts announced a month before, according to a Sept. 5 report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. Excluding the more than 115,000 job cuts announced in August 2020, last month represented the highest August total since 2009, when more than 76,000 layoffs were recorded. “August’s surge in job cuts reflects growing economic uncertainty and shifting market dynamics,” said Andrew Challenger, SVP of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., in a statement.

The Impact of the August 2024 Google Core Update on Online Recruiting

Google Core updates are changes to how Google ranks websites in search results. They aim to improve the quality and relevance of the information people find. These updates focus on rewarding sites with helpful, trustworthy content and ensuring the best user experience. According to John Mueller, the search advocate and leading Google spokesperson, this 2024 core update has two goals: Goal 1: Show more content that people find genuinely helpful and less content that feels like it was made to perform on search. Do you see how showing the job ad from the ATS that matches a branded query can be considered more helpful content in Google’s eyes than sending users to a search result landing page from Indeed? Part of Indeed’s SEO strategy was creating millions of search queries in long-tail and capturing traffic. The reality is that a job seeker looking for specific jobs from a company does not have to go to Indeed—they can go to the company's career page because of their clear intent—to apply for a job.

Age discrimination in Germany costs up to 28 billion euros per year

39% of people aged 55 and over want to work beyond retirement age, according to a recent Stepstone study. Preferably for four years and 24 hours a week. This is great news for the German economy! Because: 1. As early as 2035, more people will retire than young professionals will enter the labour market. Without countermeasures, there is a threat of a deficit of 7 million workers – including losses in productivity and prosperity. 2. If only those of retirement age who want to continue working were to work longer, an additional 570,000 people would be available to the labour market from 2030 onwards 3. Converted, this means that they could generate up to 28 billion euros annually.
