ChatGPT is violating Europe’s privacy laws, Italian DPA tells OpenAI
OpenAI has been told it’s suspected of violating European Union privacy, following a multi-month investigation of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, by Italy’s data protection authority. Details of the Italian authority’s draft findings haven’t been disclosed. But the Garante said today OpenAI has been notification and given 30 days to respond with a defence against the allegations. Confirmed breaches of the pan-EU regime can attract fines of up to €20 million, or up to 4% of global annual turnover. More uncomfortably for an AI giant like OpenAI, data protection authorities (DPAs) can issue orders that require changes to how data is processed in order to bring an end to confirmed violations. So it could be forced to change how it operates. Or pull its service out of EU Member States where privacy authorities seek to impose changes it doesn’t like. OpenAI said: We believe our practices align with GDPR and other privacy laws, and we take additional steps to protect people’s data and privacy. We want our AI to learn about the world, not about private individuals. We actively work to reduce personal data in training our systems like ChatGPT, which also rejects requests for private or sensitive information about people. We plan to continue to work constructively with the Garante.

Tech layoffs are expected to continue as companies seek to hire more AI talent
Thanks to a fresh wave of mass layoffs, it's been a brutal start of the year for tech workers, and employees may not be out of the woods. As of January 2024, 89 tech companies have laid off almost 25,000 employees, according to tracker site Layoffs.fyi. And one analyst also said there will be more redundancies across the industry this year, primarily as they pivot their focus to spending on the AI sector. "Google and the rest of Big Tech are betting big on AI while cutting back on non-strategic areas," Dan Ives, a tech analyst at Wedbush Securities, told CNBC. Layoffs will continue in some areas, while"the hiring frenzy in AI will be unprecedented as this arms race continues across the tech world."
Aerospace company pays $7.4M to settle no-poach suit tied to DOJ investigation
A collection of aerospace companies has agreed to settle with workers who alleged that the companies engaged in an illegal no-poach agreement with one company, Cyient Inc., set to pay $7.4 million, according to court documents filed Wednesday. The news represents the latest development in a nearly three-year-long dispute before the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut. In 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice sued a former executive at Raytheon subsidiary Pratt & Whitney, alleging that he participated in a “long-running conspiracy” with managers and executives at outsource engineering suppliers to restrict hiring and recruiting of the companies’ engineers and other skilled workers.
