Google says immigration rules are making it hard to hire top AI talent

As the artificial-intelligence wars heat up, Google says immigration rules must change if the US is to attract the talent needed to stay ahead. The search giant on Wednesday filed a letter to the US Department of Labor arguing for changes to rules on which types of jobs are considered scarce in the US. To get an employment-based green card, foreign-born employees often go through a process of permanent labor certification (referred to as PERM), in which their employer must make the case that there's a shortage of available workers in the US to fill the role. But the US Department of Labor has a list of "pre-certified" occupations for which it considers there to be a lack of available talent. The list includes physical therapists and professional nurses, as well as immigrants of "exceptional ability" in the arts and sciences. If you're in one of these roles, the route to a green card is easier and faster. Google is arguing that the list, referred to as Schedule A, needs to be broadened to include "critical" AI and cybersecurity-related fields. Google says the list, which was last updated in 2005, needs to be updated more frequently to adapt to changing labor needs.

AI adoption will drive both hiring and layoffs in 2024, half of tech leaders say

In a March poll of 255 U.S. business leaders in the tech industry, 50% said they anticipate a combination of both layoffs and hiring during the next six months as a direct result of AI adoption, according to an April 29 report from Ernst & Young. At the same time, 61% of leaders said emerging technology has made it more challenging to find top tech talent. “One thing is certain: Companies are reshaping their workforce to be more AI savvy. With this transition, we can anticipate a continuous cycle of strategic workforce realignment, characterized by simultaneous layoffs and hiring, and not necessarily in equal volumes,” Vamsi Duvvuri, EY’s technology, media and telecommunications AI leader, said in a statement. “But it’s not all doom and gloom,” he said. “Employees and companies alike continue to show enthusiasm around AI, specifically when it comes to opportunities to scale and compete more effectively in the marketplace.” In fact, 72% of the poll respondents said their employees are using AI at least daily at work, particularly in coding and software development, data analysis, and internal and external communication. Despite concerns about AI, most leaders said they believe the emerging tech has positively affected their workplace culture.

Hiring tactics like ‘bait and switch,’ and ‘love bombing’ drive skilled talent away, report finds

Companies struggling to recruit top talent may want take a closer look at their hiring practices, which could be driving skilled candidates away, according to a May 2 report from hiring platform Greenhouse. In a survey of 1,200 job seekers, more than half of respondents (53%) said they experienced “bait and switch” tactics, where the advertised responsibilities differed significantly once they started the role. Similarly, 53% experienced “love bombing,” where they were excessively praised and flattered only to be lowballed with a salary that didn’t match their qualifications, skills and experience, the report found. “For applicants, the hiring process is the first glimpse into the company culture,” Carin Van Vuuren, the platform’s chief marketing officer, said in a media release. “How companies treat candidates is a crucial factor; most candidates want to work with a company that values their time, communicates frequently, and is transparent.”
