Startup and tech jobs are harder to come by these days. These days, employers are less prone to woo prospective hires with hefty sign-on bonuses, approve remote work when they’d prefer onsite, or offer elaborate workplace perks like gourmet meals or on-site masseuse visits. Instead, startup employers in particular have been retooling benefits and perks with an eye to maintaining or reducing costs, all while sustaining workplace morale.
Florida has been working for years to crack down on employers that hire undocumented immigrants. But that presented a problem for businesses in the state that are desperate for workers to fill low-wage and often undesirable jobs. Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state legislature have a potential solution: children.
A memo from JPMorgan Chase announced a change to its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs, to labelling it “Diversity, Opportunity and Inclusion (DOI)” as an effort to sustain market and regulation changes. The memo released by JP’s Chief Operating Officer, Jenn Piepszak, said the team believes the change is more aligned with their approach. “The ‘e’ always meant equal opportunity to us, not equal outcomes, and we believe this more accurately reflects our ongoing approach to reach the most customers and clients to grow our business, create an inclusive workplace for our employees and increase access to opportunities,” Piepszak said.
The typical CV and cover letter are becoming unreliable, recruiters say, as employers turn to personality tests to combat a rise in AI-generated applications. Recruiters have reported an increase in psychometric assessments, measuring candidates’ personal skills and behaviours, as an additional measure in job applications. The assessments are typically used for roles that receive a high volume of applications or entry level positions where candidates have less job-relevant experience, such as graduate schemes.
Gen Z has been fast-tracking their way up the career ladder by job-hopping. But the shortcut to bigger paychecks and snazzy job titles has lost its edge. Now, staying loyal pays virtually just as much as jumping ship. Workers who stayed put at their jobs received a 4.6% wage bump in January and February, while those who switched gigs only received a marginally higher increase of 4.8%, according to new data from the Atlanta Fed.
