The European Commission is proposing a pause to parts of its landmark artificial intelligence laws amid intense pressure from Big Tech companies and the US government. Brussels is set to water down part of its digital rule book, including its AI act that entered into force last year, in a decision on a so-called simplification package on November 19. The move reflects EU efforts to make the bloc more competitive against the US and China.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell drew a stark picture of a labor market that looks fine on the surface—4.3% unemployment, solid consumer spending—but is quietly losing momentum underneath. Once you adjust for statistical overcounting in the payroll data, he said during a press conference Wednesday following the FOMC meeting, “job creation is pretty close to zero.” He connected that slowdown, at least in part, to what CEOs are now openly telling investors: AI allows them to do more with fewer people.
The K-visa rolled out by Beijing last month is part of China’s widening effort to catch up with the U.S. in the race for global talent and cutting edge technology. It coincides with uncertainties over the U.S.’s H-1B program under tightened immigrations policies implemented by President Donald Trump.
More than 4 in 10 companies plan to replace roles with AI, particularly in operations and the back office (58%) and at the entry level (37%), according to an Oct. 28 report from global consulting firm Korn Ferry. However, a firm survey of more than 1,670 external global talent leaders, as well as 230 of Korn Ferry’s experts, indicated that while cutting entry-level hires may increase savings for 2026 and 2027, drying up this pipeline to future leaders could open the door to a long-term leadership crisis, the report warned.
Corporate tech departments are seeking the expertise of their human-resources counterparts—and the other way around—as businesses across the country sort through the workforce impacts of artificial intelligence. AI is already wreaking havoc on the white-collar workforce, with chief executives increasingly admitting that the technology will wipe out jobs. Looking ahead, remaining employees face a workplace transformed by new processes, new “digital” workers and new organizational structures designed to better harness AI’s potential.
